La rotonde de la Villette, ancienne barrière d’octroi du mur des fermiers généraux, fut construite avant la révolution par le célèbre architecte Claude Nicolas Ledoux. Elle fut longtemps fermée et accueille aujourd’hui le public. L’agence Holmes fut chargée d’aménager les espaces intérieurs du batiment existant afin de les rendre accessibles, tout en mettant en valeur le bâtiment lui-même. Le projet comprenait un programme varié (restaurant, bar et accueil d’événements culturels), nécessitant l’intégration des ascenseurs pour l’accessibilité universelle, et des escaliers supplémentaires. Les espaces crées se veulent ludiques, multifonctionnels et accueillants.
Une grande partie du mobilier a été conçue par l’agence : tables-scène modulable, panneau de présentation, lustre sur mesure, écran acoustique, signalétique adaptée.
The Rotonde de la Villette was originally built as a very imposing entry point on the old toll barrier around Paris in 1789, by the architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux. After many years left empty, it now houses a bar-restaurant and cultural venue for music, theatre and the arts. HOLMES architects designed the space as a multi-use hub allowing a variety of functions and permitting use by the general public for the first time. The challenge was to open up the spaces and the internal circulation for a public use, whilst keeping to the proportions and finishes of the original building, involving acoustic correction, service integration and insertion of elevators and access for the disabled.
Much of the furniture was custom designed by HOLMES for this project : modular tables/ stage units, fitted projection screens hiding building services, acoustic screens, chandeliers and bar furniture.
