Cette petite Eglise du début du 20e siècle est victime de son succès et a eu besoin de s’agrandir afin d’accueillir un plus grand nombre de visiteurs. Le bâtiment modeste de part la nature de sa construction, s’impose par une position urbaine en angle et sa symétrie. L’extension et la réflexion autour de ce projet nous a amenée à déporter l’entrée du bâtiment afin d’offrir un espace d’accueil et de circulation en dehors de la salle de culte. Une réflexion sur la flexibilité des espaces a été menée avec la mise en place d’un mur mobile et la réhabilitation totale d’une ancienne annexe associée dorénavant au bâtiment principal. La construction bois a été privilégiée pour minimiser les couts et dans une volonté architecturale de contraster avec le bâtiment existant.
This small church, built in the early 20th century, was a victim of its success, and needed to extend its space to accomodate its increasing congregation. The building is modest in style, but occupies an im- posing site from a raised mound, which meant it was not accessible to the disabled. Our design invol- ved the reorganisation of the entrance, including the inclusion of a lift and a raised platform surround which brought all the site to a single floor level. In order to render the space modular, our extension links together two existing buildings on the site, with a folding acoustic wall between the two. The use of timber for structure and cladding of the extension allowed us to express it as a « choir » space and differentiate it from the two other buildings. This low-cost project was delivered on budget and on schedule.
